Yin yoga focuses on reaching beyond the muscle, deep into the fascia/connective tissue surrounding the joints. Unlike muscle that responds to rhythmic contraction and release, connective tissue responds to slow and steady. The asanas/poses are held for longer periods of time; between 3 and minutes each. The guiding principles of Yin Yoga are to find your edge, settle in and become still.
This stillness helps to calm the mind while stretching the connective tissue. You use your breath to stay anchored and relaxed. The breath is natural and not forced. This is class is for anyone who feels tired or over-stimulated by and over-active mind. That pretty much includes everyone! Yin is a great complement to other forms of yoga. This class can improve flexibility of the joints, particularly the hips, pelvis and lower spine.
To really understand Yin Yoga, one must experience it. I hope that you will come experience it with me soon!
