The Yoga of Improv Comedy

with Laynie Gibson s

Sat August 26, 2017 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm

The Yoga of Improv Comedy

Improv, or improvisational theater, is a live form of theater where the actors write and direct themselves in the moment. What do improv and yoga have in common? They are both avenues for experiencing the present moment. In yoga, we consciously connect our bodies and minds. In improv, we playfully connect ideas as they arise. Yoga and improv are both practices of stepping out of our own way and allowing our true selves to be free.

We will begin with a short yoga practice to connect to our breath and bodies, lead by Emily Barksdale. This will be accessible to all. Bring comfy clothes and an open mind.

Laynie Gibson, of Pensacola's hilarious comedy troupe Improvable Cause, will guide us through exercises and group games that will encourage us to let go of self judgement and liberate ourselves to the present moment. Laynie has studied mindfulness at the University of West Florida and is going to show us how improv and mindfulness enhance our daily lives.

Whether you're a beginner or a veteran, you will find a warm and welcoming environment to play in. So join us as we free ourselves and have fun together!

$10

Please be aware that improv is about letting go of self-censorship and inhibitions, so there may (likely) be adult themes and language.

Led by Melissa Garner, Licensed Mental Health Counselor & Yoga Teacher

***

Self care: Any intentional action taken to heal, maintain, and improve mental, physical, and emotional health.

"But isn't self care selfish?"
"My needs can wait..."
"I don't have time for self care."
"I'm too exhausted to do anything for me."

As a counselor, yoga instructor, and self-care advocate, the above statements are ones I've heard consistently from those suffering with depression, anxiety, and burn-out.

This world is truly blessed by our various caregivers, healers, and teachers... however, we "givers" are notorious for putting our needs last, leaving little time and energy for self care and restoration. Habitual self neglect often leads to fatigue, low mood, and limited functioning. When we are feeling low on energy, we are unable to fully give, care, and connect with those around us.

It wasn't until I became a counselor that I learned that self care isn't selfish - it's NECESSARY (especially if helping others is important to you!) Part of my training to become a licensed counselor included establishing a personal self care plan. That is because, in order to effectively help others, we must keep ourselves stable and healthy. It's like they say on the airplane: Put your oxygen mask on first, then help others.

This lesson has proven true over the years as a mental health counselor, yoga teacher, and in my role as a mother, wife, daughter, friend, etc.. When I am not at my best, I am simply unable to give my best to those around me. Don't get me wrong - I love to help and serve others. But without self care, the body and mind are at higher risk of irritability, overwhelm, and emotional and physical burn-out.

Simply put, when we implement routine self care habits, our mental and physical health improves, as well as our capacity for compassion and helping others. Self care is necessary to ensure we function at our fullest potential so that we can engage in the present moment, problem solve effectively and confidently, and help others.

The goal isn't to shove everyone off the plate -- it's to save some space for your self. So give yourself (and your loved ones) the gift of a healthier, happier, and restored YOU.

It's time we break the stigma. It's time for self care.

Sweet Mystery: The Sound of Healing the Soul w/ Dr. DeMaria

with Michael DeMaria

Fri December 1, 2017 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Sweet Mystery: The Sound of Healing the Soul w/ Dr. DeMaria

In many native languages the translation for Creator or God is Great Mystery - a phrase that has spoken deeply to me over the years. The rational, strategic, analytic mind wants to split the world into duality, which severs the innate wholeness of life, which is at its core paradoxical. To honor the mystery, we must learn to be exquisitely present to the here and now of each moment, and embrace the currents and cross-currents of being and becoming - as we learn to traverse the rapids of modern life.

We will drop in and explore the mystery through sound healing, movement, laughter, and explorations of deep inquiry into the mysteries of life and death, day and night, male and female, sound and silence, movement and stillness.

Investment: $25
