Sound baths, Ice baths, YINward, and MORE! Practice of the Week: Showing up for your practice in studio is amazing, AND there is something extra magical about showing up for your practice outside of the studio. The URU team desires to support you in deepening your personal practice and to empower you to take learning and practicing into your own hands. This week we invite you to explore your practice on and off the mat! ???? Reverse Triangle (Viparita Trikonasana) ???? ???? Practice of the Week at URU Yoga: Reverse Triangle (Viparita Trikonasana) ???? Demonstrated by Jen Faith Getting into the Pose: From the simple Tadasana, bring the feet placing them wide apart and stand in the Star Pose taking a few rounds of breathing here. From the Star Pose, turn the right foot outwards to 90 degrees, and bring the left foot inwards to 45 degrees. Make sure the foot is comfortable and so are the knees. Inhale and raise the right arm above your shoulders and head and take it backwards without bending the elbows. Exhale completely and and bring the left hand down to be placed on the back of the left knee. Flexing the neck, shoulder, arms and the hips go gently backwards, feeling the stretch at the right side of the lower side back, the side upper back close to the side wall of the right ribs, the lower abdomen and the neck. Make sure the body is facing towards the side, the chest and the shoulders are in line and now facing the right foot or forward. The body remains like in the pose Trikonasana. Benefits of Reverse Triangle: ????Stretches, Strengthens, Lengthens: In Reverse Triangle Pose, while the right side of the spine bends, the left side stretches and vice-a-versa, and brings stability and balance to both sides of the spine and the various muscles involved in the stretch. A beautiful way of stretching the muscles of the legs, arms, chest, rib cage, abdominal area, neck, and shoulders along with compressing one side of the torso, this backbend helps to strengthen and tone the legs and back. It also helps build a much stronger core. ???? Chest, Diaphragm and Breath: The deep stretch of the torso from the lower abdomen in Viparita Trikonasana encourages the opening of the chest. Using the maximum of the diaphragm, it encourages better use of the lungs and improves breathing with practice. With an improved breathing process, opening of the heart is encouraged, keeping it active and fresh. ???? Stimulation and Organs: The stretching of the belly and the use of the core and the abdominal muscles helps improve the functioning of various organs, while the maximum stretch is felt at the navel. This is a great way to improve the fire in the body and enhances digestion. With love and light, Your URU Kula JOIN US THIS WEEKEND….. Yin yoga is a style of yoga that targets the joints, ligaments, fascia, and connective tissue. Poses are held anywhere from 3-10 minutes to allow our bodies to meet edges and soften into a pose. We will be encouraging the use of props (blankets, blocks, and bolsters) to optimize our comfort in this process. We will begin the practice with a guided meditation to facilitate your inward journey. Makaylah will guide you through a 90 minute Yin sequence while both Makaylah and Kala offer hands on assists to support you in finding depth. The assists will be a mixture of massage techniques, energy work, and adjustments to support your posture. We will only touch you with your consent. We will then close out the evening with another guided meditation to facilitate you coming back into your body. Wear cozy clothes, if you have props (blankets, bolsters, blocks, eye pillow, etc.) bring them, and maybe even bring your favorite cup of tea! We look forward to seeing you on the mat. Kirtan: Call & Response Mantra Chanting w/ Brenan & Makayah Location: URU Yoga – 9 Mile Every Thursday 7 – 8:15 pm Use your class pass, $15 drop-in, or sliding scale options available Yay! A weekly Kirtan at URU Yoga – 9 Mile!!! In this class, led by Makaylah McCleery & Brenan Woody, you will experience a taste of Bhakti Yoga. Bhakti Yoga is the path of loving devotion. Kirtan is the practice of call & response Sanskrit mantra chanting. Brenan or Makaylah will sing the chant & you are encouraged to repeat it in response! Singing is not required, but it is highly encouraged. You are always welcome to just come sit and see what it’s about before you participate. Brenan plays the hand-drum, and Makaylah plays the harmonium to support the mantras. A few other instruments will be provided, if you decide that you’d like to add to the soundscape… we encourage that you bring any instrument you’d like to add! Mantras are sacred sounds used to focus the mind on the Divine. Names of deities will be used, but this doesn’t mean that you are invoking anything outside of yourself. You are the Divine, and you are chanting to that place within YOU. We will not dive too deep into the meanings of these mantras in this class, instead- we will focus on dropping into the chanting and opening our hearts to our own unique experience. Brenan & Makaylah offer more in-depth workshops and classes to dive deeper into mythology and meaning if you are interested in learning more! There will be no Asana (physical practice) in this class. We will be seated with cushions and other supports. Dancing, standing, or lying down is also available! Just whatever you need to remain comfortable through class. We will burn incense, palo santo, or sage… if there is a student with scent sensitivity, we will forgo the burning of any scents. We will keep the lighting relatively low… but there will be plenty of light to see! ***Please note, that we will NOT be using the powerpoint slides that we have used previously at events. We’d like for this to be a more traditional, intimate, and screen-free event. We are working towards creating a song-book to share with attendees, but until then- we will just be singing simple chants from memory! ***Also, if you are unable to pay the entire $15 drop-in, we will accept donations for this class. Pay anything you are able! We just want you to show up and experience this! Venmo: @makaylahmccleery ***If you are feeling any hesitancy, we invite you to release your inhibitions and just come give it a try! You will be met with so much love, support, and patience.
